FAQ
Questions Parents Often Ask
When is a good time to start looking at colleges?
To get a general feeling about the different types of campuses, stop by and visit a few during vacations. For colleges in consideration, the summer before and during junior year or early senior year. For narrowing colleges with acceptances, summer or fall of senior year.
What’s the first step?
Self-knowledge is the most important starting point. Knowing potential majors or career fields; expectations from a college campus; or what kind of community is important, will help keep the college search process focused.
Why should we work with an Independent College Counselor?
Contact me to set up a free 30-minute consult to see if your young adult could benefit from working with me. I want the best for all of us – if your young adult needs only specific assistance, I will offer that contract. If there’s a need for more structure and follow-through, I will suggest that. The best use of my time is also the best use of your time and money.
Do we still work with the high school guidance counselor?
Yes, you and your young adult must also work with the high school-based counselor because they provide support including the letter of recommendation, transcripts, etc.
I work with students via Zoom and therefore am not limited to physical geography. Historically, my clients live in Illinois or the greater Mid-west. The colleges my previous clients considered and graduated from cover a full range from small Liberal Arts and Sciences to large Research 1 institutions or from campuses which focus on first-generation students to those who have unique curriculums. My philosophy is to build a list of solid options which best match the students and their goals.

"Jennifer is thorough, engaged, and patient when it comes to working with students. Without her expertise and guidance, I do not think my college application process would have gone as well as it did."
Michael, HP Project Manager
"Scene one: When I first starting meeting with Jennifer, I was thinking
of majoring in history, theatre, or international relations with some
vague thought of law school. Scene three: My parents and I made a round of campus visits and I quickly realized what direction I was being
pulled to take – musical theatre. During a discussion following those
visits, Jennifer handed over a second list of options – all theatre or
musical theatre options. She had seen my face explode with joy when
speaking of the productions I had been a part of. She referred me to a
theatre audition coach, I revised my essays and I was ready to focus on
my senior year. It was a multi-pronged process because I had been so
unsure of which path to take. Scene five: I am confident of my future
and I could not have gotten to this scene without Jennifer’s guidance,
support and help keeping me organized. Final scene: to be written."
